So, I've attempted Yoganidrasana today... in other words - I've tied myself into a knot and tried to take a nap 😊 :)) ... joke aside, legend has it, the ancient yogis really did sleep in this posture, thus the name of the pose - Yogic Sleep. As uncomfortable as it may seem, this asana is meant to induce deep relaxation and promote pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses). Practicing this deep supine forward bend has many benefits on physical level. To name a few: it stretches the deep muscles in the spine, the small muscles and ligaments in the neck, increases spinal flexibility, improves digestion, has a positive impact on the central nervous system. On mental level it boosts inner strength, alleviates stress, promotes calmness, improves self-control, boosts the concentration. On energetic level Yoganidrasana activates the svadisthana chakra, which is believed to be the seat of creativity. A balanced svadisthana chakra helps to achieve emotional stability and a sense of balance. Stress. - Stress can kill people. - I’ve been called a number of things in my life (some don’t bare repeating here). One of my earliest memories was being told I am “too sensitive”. Everything, everyone, and all energies affect me. I would cry with the kid who was bullied. I would hurt the way another child did in pain. - I used to resent this very much thinking it meant I was weak. Adults would tell me I needed to “stop being a baby” and “grow up”. This led me to create a hardened heart within me. Until I sought professional therapy to understand myself did I discover I am an empath - diagnosed. I feel everything people around me are going through, wether I choose to, or not. - A blessing, or a curse? Well, I’ve learned over the years that’s up to me to decide. I have learned it can be my greatest asset in my work as a yoga teacher. I can tune in to someone’s emotions and inspire settle movements in the body to help release. - I used to enjoy running out doors very much to deal with all the pent up emotion I’d taken on from others on top of my own - all that stress on my nervous system and spirit. I’ve had to learn the hard way after 3 knee surgeries, hip, and spinal issues that running won’t do anymore. - In this season of my life, I am appreciating slowing things down. Instead of running, get grounded. A very hard lesson I had to learn for reasons larger than my own understanding. - Here I am relaxing in supine elevated legs up the wall with butterfly variation to open the stress in my hips. Inversions are so good for my head and heart - better for my spirit. - By the way - never let anyone make you believe you are “too” anything. You are made the way you are for your purpose. Believe that.
